Beyond the shingle

What goes under the shingles

Most of the work that protects your home is out of sight. A well-installed mid-range shingle will often outperform a premium shingle installed poorly underneath.

01

Decking

Solid, dry decking gives shingles something to hold on to. Soft or damaged decking is replaced before new material goes down.

02

Ice & water shield

A self-sealing membrane at the eaves and in valleys, where winter meltwater tends to back up.

03

Underlayment

A secondary water barrier laid over the entire deck.

04

Drip edge & flashing

Metal details that direct water off the roof edge and seal it around chimneys, walls and vents.

05

Starter strip & ridge cap

The edges and the peak are where wind tends to get under shingles first.

06

Ventilation

A ventilated attic keeps heat and moisture from building up under the roof, which affects shingle wear and winter ice.

Why Michiana weather matters

Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan put a roof through repeated freeze-thaw cycles, lake-effect snow, summer heat and severe storms. Shingles installed correctly handle that mix well. Shingles installed over weak decking or with poor ventilation tend to wear faster, and a poorly ventilated attic can also cause ice to form at the eaves and push water under the shingles. We check ventilation as part of every estimate.

Shingle questions

What's the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?

3-tab shingles are flat and uniform in appearance, and typically the lower-cost option. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker and layered for a more textured look, and generally have a longer expected lifespan. We'll go over both during your estimate.

How long do asphalt shingles last in Northern Indiana?

It depends on the product line and the installation. Correct installation, with proper ventilation, underlayment and flashing, matters as much as the shingle itself in how long a roof lasts. Your estimate will cover the warranty options for the shingle you choose.

Can I see shingle color and style options before deciding?

Yes. We'll go through manufacturer color and style options as part of your estimate, so you can see what a specific shingle looks like before you commit.

Do I need a whole new roof if only part of it is worn?

Not necessarily. If the wear is limited to one area and the decking underneath is sound, a repair may be the better value. If wear is widespread, replacement usually makes more sense than repeated repairs. A free inspection will tell you which applies.

Does the shingle brand matter?

Product lines differ in appearance, thickness and warranty options. In practice, how the roof is installed (decking, underlayment, flashing and ventilation) matters at least as much as the name on the bundle.
